Industry Focus

What is Pharmaceutical?
The Pharmaceuticals Industry includes manufacturers and distributors of name-brand and generic pharmaceutical products.

What is Biotechnology?
In its purest form, the term "biotechnology" refers to the use of living organisms or their products to modify human health and the human environment. Prehistoric biotechnologists did this as they used yeast cells to raise bread dough and to ferment alcoholic beverages, and bacterial cells to make cheeses and yogurts and as they bred their strong, productive animals to make even stronger and more productive offspring.
Throughout human history, we have learned a great deal about the different organisms that our ancestors used so effectively. The marked increase in our understanding of these organisms and their cell products gains us the ability to control the many functions of various cells and organisms. Using the techniques of gene splicing and recombinant DNA technology, we can now actually combine the genetic elements of two or more living cells.
Functioning lengths of DNA can be taken from one organism and placed into the cells of another organism. As a result, for example, we can cause bacterial cells to produce human molecules. Cows can produce more milk for the same amount of feed. And we can synthesize therapeutic molecules that have never before existed.

What is Medical Device?
The term 'medical device' covers all products, except medicines, used in healthcare for the diagnosis, prevention, monitoring or treatment of illness or handicap. The range of products is very wide: it includes contact lenses and condoms; heart valves and hospital beds; resuscitators and radiotherapy machines; surgical instruments and syringes; wheelchairs and walking frames - many thousands of items used each and every day by healthcare providers and patients.

What is Contract Research Organization (CRO)?
A CRO is a full-service contract research and development organization with the experience, commitment, and creative resources to facilitate the passage of new drugs, biologics, and medical devices through the regulatory approval process to market entry. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical device sponsors expect to increase outsourcing to the several hundred CROs. Reports show that pharmaceutical companies have increased use of CROs from 28% of clinical studies in 1993 to 60% in 1997. This reflects increased spending on CR0 traditional services of Phase III study monitoring, data management, pharmacoeconomic analysis, and medical writing. While these services remain the most highly utilized, CROs are also offering new services to satisfy sponsors demands for faster trials and globalization.

The professionals' roles and responsibilities often begin in the research and development phases, moving into clinical trials and extending through premarket approvals, manufacturing, labeling and advertising and postmarket surveillance.
